A Fitting Epitaph Powerpoint

  1. I like the organization of your presentation. You did a good job explaining Orwell's literature by the way in which younorganized your powerpoint. You did a good job by having a slide that simply listed the main rhetorical devices used. With our eyes, we could see what the devices were, and at the same time, we hea how those devices crrate meaning and characterize Orwell's litterature. Furthermore, you have a slide with "Orwell's rules," which helps to better understand Orwell's style and way of thinking. Good job!

  2. I find George Orwell an interesting author because of the themes and meanings of his novels. 1984 in particular is a strikingly interesting novel that somewhat always makes me wonder if we are headed into a society similar. You mention that in 1984 the objective truth is obscured through ignorance. Do you think that politicians these days are ignorant towards the issues of the people and will this ignorance create a pluralistic and limited society like that of 1984? As long as we are guaranteed our free speech, I feel like we are far from a 1984-type scenario. Society today, more than ever, believes in no boundaries and the idea of free speech. If anything, we are going in the opposite direction of society in George Orwell's 1984. While he was a prolific writer, his political accuracy was slightly off.

  3. Your introduction was very interesting, to say the least. But I actually really liked it. It was quirky, funny and it engaged everyone. Orwell is a very complex and interesting author to me. Especially with Animal Farm. That piece has always been fascinating to me because of the allegory he uses. Which is why I appreciate your attention to the allegory and the rest of the literary devices Orwell uses. It really defines him as a writer and you did a good job at showing us that.

  4. Going back through your powerpoint for the presentation I really, really like the slide about "Orwell's Rules" because that clearly states better than any other method what the characteristics of his writing are. Whereas a lot of us have taken so much time to try and talk about our author's writing style and not even put it on a slide, you clearly outline the characteristics of his writing style and then you went back and explained it in depth, which was a very effective method of exposing Orwell's style.

  5. Your introduction to your presentation was not only attention grabbing but held an element of humor that was unexpected considering your author and the kind of novels they wrote. I thought it was very clever and caused everyone in the class to laugh and pay attention to what you were about to say. Transitioning in to the presentation from the introduction was smooth, and your set up of how long you talked about Orwell’s personal life compared to how much you discussed the actual style and themes of the novels was good. You made me want to read Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Something that I particularly liked about your presentation was your slide in your PowerPoint that focused on comparing the two novels from Orwell that you read, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. I thought that you did an excellent job of paralleling the two and bringing together themes and meanings between the two. This really helped me understand how Orwell’s style as a whole is, instead of leaving me wondering if he had inconsistent themes and purposes in his different novels. You did a solid job of explaining the similarities in a way that helped me understand each of the novels from an individual standpoint as well.

  6. First of all, I wanted to congratulate you on exploring the complexity of George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm because you discussed the employment of satire and allegory, rather than the general imagery, diction and syntactical structure. Your thesis statement not only illustrated your excellent abilities as a writer, but also demonstrated the depth of your knowledge as a person. In my presentation, I also conversed about the political implications of a totalitarian regime, and how it can deliberately and effectively control each and every aspect of society.
By clearly outlining the various rhetorical and literary devices used in Orwellian literature, AP Multicultural Literature students are able to really take away the vital information from your presentation. The overall organization of your presentation, combined with your magnificent elaboration on the aspects of Orwellian literature aided my understanding of the novels, as well as enhancing my perspective in the political spectrum. I agree with the fact that “moral conscience is indicative of maturity,” however, how can a person be capable of developing if there is this oppressive society coercing itself upon a sense of individuality? What is the breaking point for humanity, and how capable is it of altering common culture in order to make life worth living?
